    La gran sonrisa cantante de Carmen Souza clausura el Portón del Jazz 2015

    Una enorme sonrisa mestiza que canta y deslumbra echó el mejor cierre posible anoche al Portón del Jazz. La incandescente Carmen Souza, lisboeta de nacimiento y con raíces familiares caboverdianas, puso el broche de oro a la edición 2015 del mas pujante festival de su género del sur de Europa. Y es que con artistas y veladas como esta, el Portón del Jazz progresivamente se ha ido colocando en el top de la programación jazzística, lo que corroboran tanto el eco mediatico (TVE, El País, prensa malagueña y alhaurina, etc…) como el gran ritmo de venta anticipada, con cartel de entradas agotadas en tres de los cuatro conciertos.

    Haciendo balance, las sensaciones del ciclo han sido inmejorables, merced al técnicamente brillante arranque del virtuoso Robert Glasper Trío, el espectáculo de fusión del universal Richard Bona con la solidez del Mandekan Cubano y la pica puesta por el poderío de Marcus Miller y su banda en pleno Afrodeezia Tour.

    Los asistentes disfrutaron anoche de una voz muy diferente, con ese encanto criollo fácil de interiorizar aunque difícil de describir. En momentos Carmen Souza nos puede recordar a Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday o Nina Simone, pero nunca totalmente gracias a su propia impronta tras asimilar y transformar estas y otras influencias con su propio vocabulario. Y es que, si algo ha demostrado Carmen es que es un crisol humano y vocal, que asimila y transforma por completo las influencias, potenciando sus propios toques.

     

    El resultado es una voz rica en matices, serena, en ocasiones muy sensual, otras veces espontánea, desenfadada, incluso divertida, que no duda en sentarse al piano o acariciar acordes a la guitarra.

    Nacida en 1981, sacudió la escena musical lusa cuando a principios del nuevo milenio empezó a cantar en los clubes de jazz de la capital portuguesa.

    Derrochadora en matices, mezcla a capricho ritmos criollos de Cabo Verde con el jazz norteamericano. Su voz no es un simple soplo melódico, sino un instrumento de viento o de cuerdas vocales, que dispone a su voluntad según encarte.

    Tras el cóctel de ritmos de “Kachupada” (2012), en el que mezclaba magistralmente elementos del jazz contemporáneo y la música afro-latina, en 2014 sacó “Live at Lagny Jazz Festival”, en el que la cantante pasa por su personal filtro standards míticos.

    Entre otros galardones, Carmen fue seleccionada entre las “31 Best Jazz singers 2013” por el Music Jazz Critics Poll NPR (Radio Nacional Pública de EEUU) y recibió el premio a Mejor Voz femenina 2013 en los Cabo Verde Music Awards.

    En octubre de 2015 lanzará “Epistola”, su nuevo trabajo compuesto y co-producido junto a Theo Pascal, una increible carta sonora dirigida a todo aquel que quiera recibirla. Su concierto en el inigualable marco de la finca El Portón fue el mejor adelanto de este trabajo discográfico que tendrá gran repercusión. El Blues de Cabo Verde, Thursday o una preciosa versión intimista de la cinematográfica Moonlight Serenade,llevándola a medios tiempos intrépidos, fueron junto con standards en francés de todos los tiempos, mas que muestra y un botón en la mágica velada del 31 de julio. Acompañada por su alter ego epistolar, Theo Pascal al bajo y contrabajo así el Ruben Fox al saxo y el organista Matt King.
